RSP Recap: Feelings & Free Aren’t Always The Best Business

I missed publishing this Monday due to a hectic couple of weeks.

My FEELINGS were telling me to panic, to feel guilty, to pressure myself to make time where there wasn’t and get this published.

Luckily Mallie reminded me that I was the only person putting those limitations on myself.

You see, passion in business can be great, but it can also get many of us in trouble.

So can “free.”

Last week’s Ready, Set, Podcast episodes cover these subjects nicely, so let’s dive in!

Ep. 13: Heart-Based Business And The Passion Problem

I think we all start in a place of,

“If I love what I do I won’t work a day in my life.”

But that’s not really true.

Even my best relationships, the people I love with every ounce of my being, are work.

I love my new house. It’s more work than I could imagine!

I love my dog. But without training and discipline she wouldn’t be the good girl she is.

I love my fiancé — I can’t wait to marry him — but we too have to work on being partners who make compromises, sacrifices, and can problem solve our way through any crisis.

If you think about the things and people you love, I’m sure you’ll see that even where there is passion and love, it isn’t easy.

If that were true I’d be writing this post from my yacht. 🙂

Love In Business Can Be Bland

Mark Schaefer gives an exercise in Social Media Explained that asks the question,

“What does your company do that no one else does?”

I do this exercise with clients and hear things like:

  • We’re people people!
  • We’re the best company in the world!
  • We have the best prices!
  • We really care!

Now take that a step further and add the phrase, “just like every other company” at the end of each of those.

It’s pretty frightening:

  • We’re people people, just like every other company!
  • We’re the best company in the world, just like every other company!
  • We’ve have the best prices, just like every other company!
  • We really care, just like every other company!

Passion and love and a happy-happy-joy-joy mentality don’t do much to differentiate your brand or tell your unique story.

Now, if we’re talking about customer service, and you answer every inquiry within 3 hours, THAT’S something that invokes a passion for helping, and a love of your customers.

That sets you apart.

That’s putting passion to work (and most likely money in the  bank).

Just remember: the dream is free but success takes work.

Ep. 14: Jenny Brennan Says Free Doesn’t Cut It On Facebook

I know we’re all sick of Facebook.

Reach on many of our pages is abysmal.

But instead of telling you what you already know, Jenny mentions some SUPER ideas and tools for better Facebook advertising:

As if those tool golden nuggets weren’t enough, Jenny gave us this food for thought:

“Even with Facebook ads, you have to bring people on a journey.”

Be honest: Are you boosting to boost? Pushing ads just to sell?

If you answered yes, be sure to listen to Jenny’s episode!

Listen to the three of us talk about how FREE on Facebook is now a farce.

What do you think about passion, positivity, and heart-based business? And how are you tackling “free” on Facebook? Let us know in the comments section below!
